(#30) Grave of the Fireflies (1988) - [9.5/10]

Updated: Apr 8, 2019

Sample Premise.

A devastating meditation on the human cost of war, this animated tale follows Seita (Tsutomu Tatsumi), a teenager charged with the care of his younger sister, Setsuko (Ayano Shiraishi), after an American firebombing during World War II separates the two children from their parents. Their tale of survival is as heartbreaking as it is true to life. The siblings rely completely on each other and struggle against all odds to stay together and stay alive.

How would I describe this film in one word?

Review

Grave of the Fireflies is a drama/war focusing on the struggle of two kids to survive after losing their parents in a war tom Japan. Sounds terrible and depressing? Well it gets more tragic and heart breaking from there as the audience witness their daily struggle for the next 1 hr 30 mins. This film is a realistic depiction of the ferociously barbaric nature of war and how it affects the lives of the innocent ordinary citizens who are dragged into it. Anime is popularly known to fall under fantasy or sci-fi but that's where this beauty stands out to prove that anime can capture reality in its crudest nature as well. You're likely to shed a tear unless you're a heartless idiot like me (sigh). Watch it in Japanese cause the English audio lacks the "feels". Definitely a 9.5/10.
