(#53) Clannad S1-S2 (2007) - [8.5/10]

Updated: Apr 8, 2019

Sample Premise.

Tomoya (Kenji Nojima) has no interest in school until he meets Nagisa (Mai Nakahara) and, to impress her, he helps reform the drama club.

How would I describe this show in one word?

Sample word.

Note This will be a review of both Clannad and Clannad After Story.

Review Clannad is a slice of life/romance/drama about two high-schoolers, Okazaki Tomoya and Nagisa Furukawa. It’s that anime that could teach you what depression really is. I’ve seen some depressing and eye-watering animes over the past couple of months but nothing ripped my soul out the way Clannad did. Even today I could go back and watch some scenes while struggling to hold the tears. The transition of Clannad from a semi-dramatic rom-com in season 1 to a tragic tale of life and loss in season 2 is stunning. I was too quick to assume that Clannad wouldn’t strike me right in the feels after season 1 but boy was I wrong. The pacing of the story can be a little bit slow but you’ll get used to it, cause by the end of the day, it’s a slice of life anime.

However, the world of Clannad has inbuilt super natural elements with the ability to influence a situation (kind of like the "power of God') and personally, I feel that it tampers the appeal of an otherwise convincing and beautiful story with a cliffhanger ending *sigh*. Anyway, if you’re looking for a feels trip that’ll dismantle you for a couple of days, give Clannad a shot, and no, it’s not an anime for girls, I have no idea where that remark popped up from. I'd give it… RATING: 8.5/10
