The world is infected by monsters who make you kill yourself when you look at them

How would I describe this film in one word?
Disappointing.
Note
Watched this movie because of its buzz around social media.
Review
So this movie centers Sandra Bullock as the anti-social, had-a-rough-childhood Malorie. The world is infected by monsters who make you kill yourself when you look at them. She, with a group of strangers, have to learn how to survive while being trapped in a house isolated from the outside world - subtly drawing lines to Malorie's socially-conflicted character. The movie simultaneously follows her journey (five years in the future) with her kids through the river to a safe haven in the woods. The shift between the two timelines are pretty seamless and doesn't confuse the viewer. But is all this any interesting? We can see that the writer had a nice incentive of what he wanted this story to be, but his vision didn't seem to be transferred and comprehended by the director cause for this story to work, our protagonist's character needed to be dug deeper but we didn't feel that intimate connection with her. The movie had a lot of potential, Sandra Bullock gave a pretty convincing performance but there's so many factors that go into a movie to create an entertainer and this movie unfortunately didn't have all the pieces. At least we could say it never got boring, though it never really got interesting either - there we moments when we thought it could though, but that was just met with unflattering responses.
