(#62) Antoine Griezmann: The Making of a Legend (2019) - [6.25/10]

Updated: Apr 8, 2019

An account of the life of Antoine Griezmann, a french football player who led his country to World Cup victory in 2018.

With heart and determination, Antoine Griezmann overcame his small stature to become one of the world's top soccer players and a World Cup champion.

How would I describe this film in one word?

Disorganized.

Note

There are quite a few things wrong with this movie, starting from the title, to the subject, to the film itself. It's all pretty disorganized and stuffed in a well-decorated shoe box.

Review First off, the man's not a legend. Apparently the French version of the documentary is titled "Antoine Griezmann: World Champion" which would be factually more apt. Secondly, the subject Griezmann, although already well accomplished at 28, is still only 28. It's not a necessarily young age for footballers, but not an old one either. These kinds of documentaries of Sports personalities typically release after their retirement and accomplished everything accomplished. He still has a lot left to offer with the 5 years of standard footballing career remaining. Sure, players have released their documentaries while still playing like Zlatan at age 34, Ronaldo at age 30 and Messi at age of 27. But these are three players are globally recognized 'living legends' and Griezmann, no offense to him, is not one. Certainly not right now. The standard procedure of releasing a documentary of yourself after retirement has been taken up by the likes of Pele, Maradona, Zidane and Gerrard. But besides this little criticism, there is a whole lot at mistake with the film in itself.

I felt that there was no real structure to the story. I get that it narrates the actual story while going back and forth with the 2018 World Cup win, but it doesn't go chronologically, it just goes back to a random past event and skips forward with proper structure. And there are so many instances where they replay the same goal over abd over. If you've seen the film, you would be get familiar to three of his goals by now and his one Messi tacke cause that's just been replayed 10 times over. He's a great player with plentiful goals undoubtedly, so why couldn't you editors find some other great goals of his? Which makes you wonder and ask yourself the question, "Was his career even interesting?" That's what the editors make me ask myself. But he does have an interesting story infact of losing few finals and then finally winning the big one. But they just don't portray it well enough. It's a poorly directed film which understates the great player he is and adds fuel to the fire by giving it a ridiculous title.

At least the cinematography and music was nice. Though at times you feel that's all Netflix is good at. A pretty picture of a loosely sewn subject. RATING: 6.25/10
